Public sector policy engagement:
In addition to her Congressional testimony and confidential lawmaker consultations, Professor Matwyshyn has had the privilege of presenting talks and collaborating with various federal agencies on projects, including both U.S. agencies such as Federal Trade Commission, Food and Drug Administration, Consumer Product Safety Commission, and Federal Communications Commission, as well as international regulators such as the European Commission.
During her time as the FTC's senior policy advisor/academic in residence in 2014, she launched the continuing relationship between the FTC and the DEFCON hacker conference.
In 2014-2015, she represented a group of leading computer security academics and successfully obtained the broadest security research exemption in the history of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act during the Copyright Office's triennial DMCA rulemaking process. This exemption has been described by the FTC as "a big win for...consumers."
